How to Fish beginner guide: the first hour

Go from the boat crash to a prepared Forest departure without selling the boss item, forgetting the Radar or wasting the opening budget.

Opening routeClams → NPCs → weapon → Beer → Empty Can → Spider Crab → Keys → Radar

Expect roughly 30–60 minutes on a first run. Physics, co-op distractions and purchase choices change the pace.

Three rules that prevent most resets

01

Quest shapes beat price tags

An odd body part or empty container may unlock an island. Never sell a named result before checking the quest giver.

02

Damage finishes the economy loop

A rod hooks the catch; a weapon turns it into sale value. Keep those two needs balanced.

03

Talk before you shop

NPC dialogue makes the next objective visible and protects the early budget from pointless upgrades.

First-hour route, step by step

01

Search the crash site

Collect nearby Clams and the useful loose items before wandering. Eat only what you need for hunger and keep surplus catches for the first sale.

Field noteThe Patch 1.0.10 verified snapshot persists up to 64 loose items, but organizing early still prevents confusion.
02

Talk to every Lighthouse NPC

Dialogue reveals the shop, missing-beer quest, engine path and the sequence that gets you off the island. Do this before buying upgrades.

03

Fund a basic weapon

Sell surplus creatures and buy a reliable way to finish a catch. A better rod catches targets; a weapon completes the kill-and-sell loop and handles the first boss.

04

Turn Beer into the boss trigger

Give the Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper. The returned Empty Beer Can is not trash: attach it to the Crab Fishing Rod to call the Spider Crab.

05

Fight Spider Crab on open ground

Pull the encounter away from clutter, move sideways through the charge line, then punish the recovery. Keep enough room to see the next rush.

06

Keep the quest result

Do not sell, cook or abandon the Spider Crab result. Return it to the Lighthouse Keeper to finish the hand-in and receive the boat keys.

07

Take the radar separately

The keys let you drive; the radar gives useful route markers. Confirm both are handled before leaving so the Forest trip is not a blind sail.

08

Prepare before departure

Carry food, a working weapon and spare funds. The Forest adds ordinary fish, ground leeches and the next boss chain, so an empty inventory is more useful than random clutter.

The opening is not a passive fishing tutorial: plan for the fight after the hook.

How to beat Spider Crab

Use the Empty Beer Can only when the arena is clear and your weapon is loaded. Stay at a short-to-medium gap until the crab commits to a charge, cross the line of attack, then use the recovery window. Trying to win by face-tanking turns a simple pattern into an expensive food check.

Do not sell the quest result

Pick up the boss item and put it in inventory. Return it to the Lighthouse Keeper. That hand-in—not the raw coin value—is the reason you fought.

Beginner FAQ

What lure do I need on the first island?+

The Crab Fishing Rod has a default pool, Hot Dog upgrades the normal shell pool, and the Empty Beer Can is the Spider Crab story trigger.

Can I play the opening solo?+

Yes. Every story objective is solo-capable. If combat is the wall, Patch 1.0.9 added an Easy mode that reduces creature health and damage.

Where do I go after Lighthouse?+

Follow the green Radar marker northwest to Forest Island after the Spider Crab hand-in and departure setup.
