How to Fish Bean Speedrun Guide & Practice Timer

Plan a one-hour Bean attempt with the five-island story route, a saved practice timer and island splits. Learn what to prepare, keep and skip.

Finish the game within one hour

Bean is the Steam achievement for finishing How to Fish within one hour. Build a repeatable story route first, then remove unnecessary stops. The island checklist below is a practice plan, not an official set of target times.

Finish the ending sequence after the final boss. A fast boss kill alone is not a completed run. Keep some margin before the hour rather than planning to finish at exactly 60:00.

Use the full progression route. Patch 1.0.5 fixed travel to islands that had not been unlocked. An old video that bypasses those unlocks is not a reliable plan for a current build. Consult the official patch archive when adapting an older route.

Practice timer & five island splits

Start alongside a new practice run. Mark each island after its progression hand-in; mark Volcano only when the ending is complete. The segment column includes travel from the previous checkpoint.

With JavaScript enabled, this browser can remember the timer and splits.

This timer cannot read the game’s clock or unlock Bean. It measures wall-clock time in this browser, continues across a reload or a closed tab, and stops only when you pause it or mark the final split. Pausing here does not pause the game. Steam’s public description does not explain how its internal timer treats menus or loading screens.

Set up before committing to a run

  • Use a fresh campaign for the attempt. Keep a separate practice save for learning boss triggers, landing spots and the ending. Avoid spending the timed attempt searching for quest givers.
  • Choose a difficulty you can finish consistently. Patch 1.0.9 introduced Easy with 25% less creature health and 50% less creature damage. Those notes do not describe an achievement restriction, but they also do not publish a separate Bean eligibility rule. See the difficulty guide.
  • Plan one dependable weapon and the required bait. Write down what you need at the next island before you open a shop. Leave room for the next quest item and prepare ammunition and healing before a boss.
  • For co-op, settle the lobby first. Agree who navigates, who carries trophies and who makes purchases. Use the same game version and a stable session before starting.

The five-island practice route

Use these checkpoints with the full walkthrough, quest directory and island map. This condensed route follows the main story; it does not attempt every achievement or optional activity.

1. Lighthouse

Turn Beer into the Empty Beer Can, use it with the Crab Fishing Rod, defeat Spider Crab and complete the keeper’s hand-in. Collect the keys and Radar before departure.

Split when: Boat keys collected; Radar ready.

2. Forest

Collect three Leeches from the ground and exchange them for the quest bait. Defeat Giant Piranha, keep the Skeleton and finish the hand-in that opens Desert.

Split when: Giant Piranha trophy handed in.

3. Desert

Bring an eligible catch to the tourist for the Carrot. Use the Carrot for Pufferfish, then hand in its quest result. Treat the grill and optional catches as separate decisions.

Split when: Pufferfish hand-in completed.

4. Rocks

Reserve funds for the Professional Boss Lure. Catch Tuna and keep its body for the Albatross encounter. Return the Albatross Head to open the Volcano route.

Split when: Albatross Head handed in.

5. Volcano

Finish the Scientist’s five-fish request for the Fish Bucket. Catch Bowhead Whale, preserve its body for the crater trigger, defeat the mutated final boss and complete the ending hand-in and departure.

Split when: Ending completed.

Protect the item that opens the next step. Put the next trophy or boss trigger aside before selling catches. The Tuna body and normal whale body are still useful after the fight; selling or cooking them can cost another encounter.

Improve the slowest segment first

After a practice run, identify why your longest segment took so long: finding the right NPC, sailing, earning purchase money, landing a catch or finishing combat. Practice that transition rather than restarting the opening repeatedly.

Reduce shopping stops

Reserve money for the next required lure and the weapon you already know. An engine upgrade can help repeated travel, but an unplanned purchase can delay the next boss trigger.

Leave cleanup for another run

Optional catches, cosmetic rolls and collection achievements add detours. If a stop does not help you survive or unlock the next stage, assess it after the story attempt.

Rehearse the hand-in

Remember the NPC, the object and the next departure point together. A short fight helps little if the trophy is left behind or you sail before completing the conversation.

Make explosives predictable

Patch 1.0.11 allows your own explosives to kill you even with Friendly Fire disabled. Leave the blast area. Do not build a route around that setting protecting you.

If you pass an hour during practice, the tool keeps recording so you can learn the later islands. A completed split sheet remains useful even when the attempt misses your target.

Bean and competitive speedrunning

Bean has a public one-hour achievement condition. A competitive run also depends on the community board’s category, game version, player count, timing method and evidence rules. Completing this timer does not verify any of those.

Before submitting a record, read the live rules for the exact board you intend to enter. Keep the build and player count visible in your own notes and compare like-for-like runs. The five-island timer here is intended for route practice, with manually marked checkpoints.

For a broader completion plan, return to the Steam achievement checklist.
