First catch: equip, cast, reel, fight, sell
A hooked creature is the start of an encounter. Bring it in, finish the fight, then decide whether the result belongs in a quest, your collection or a sale. Keep your weapon accessible before casting and leave room to move when the creature reaches land.
Already reached Forest but cannot get a bite? Check the Fishing Rod's active reel input before spending more bait. Starting from the crash site? Follow the Lighthouse beginner route for the opening purchases and quest.
Match the rod, bait and target
The Crab Fishing Rod and Fishing Rod have different compatible items. Owning the right bait does not help if a different rod or bait slot is active.
| Your goal | What to check before casting |
|---|---|
| Ordinary catches without buying bait | Use the rod's documented default pool with its bait slot empty. “Default pool” is not a separate inventory item. |
| A particular regular creature | Open its creature entry, then match the island, rod and named lure. |
| A boss or quest target | Read the quest route. A regular lure and a similarly named boss lure can serve different purposes. |
| A repeat catch for Drip hunting | Inspect the discovered creature's in-game Fishipedia bait hint before buying another batch. |
Use a routine catch to learn the controls. Save the Leech Bait, Carrot and other quest inputs for their intended encounters.
Why the Island 2 rod can feel different
Players discussing the second-island Fishing Rod report that holding left mouse while the hook is in the water pulls it toward you; leaving it still can miss the active-reeling step. The same reply describes repeated clicks once a creature is hooked. These are community control notes; use your current on-screen prompts if you have rebound the input.
- Check the held rod and equipped bait. Start beside open water with a clear landing area.
- Cast and watch the hook. Separate a cast that never reaches the water from a hook that is in the water but stationary.
- Reel actively. On the reported default mouse setup, hold left click to move the Fishing Rod's hook. Follow the catch prompt when it engages.
- Land and finish. Switch to the weapon you prepared and deal with the creature before starting another cast.
- Check before selling. Keep required trophies; pick up a sale item at least once. Patch 1.0.11 added that held-item requirement.
Fish not biting: run one controlled comparison
The reel check is useful, but it is not a confirmed fix for every case: the author of another no-bite report said they already knew that input and still had the problem.
- The hook does not move: inspect your binding and active equipment before changing lure.
- Other fish appear, but your target does not: check its specific catch route. A working rod does not prove that this lure targets that creature.
- Your friend catches beside you: compare the same rod, ordinary bait and water area, then re-equip. Note exactly which part behaves differently.
- The same setup works solo only: save normally, compare a fresh lobby and use the co-op checks.
Record the installed version, rod, bait, hook movement and whether you were host or guest. That description is more useful for a bug report than “all fishing is broken.”
Use the 1.1.3 bait hint for your next hunt
Patch 1.1.3 reveals a creature's bait name in Fishipedia after your first kill of that creature. Check a discovered entry when returning to a species or hunting its Drip variant. An undiscovered entry does not meet that reveal condition.
Keep a small target list: species, bait shown in-game, and whether you still need its ordinary or Drip entry. After a successful encounter, inspect your collection before consuming the catch. See how to decide what to do with a Drip catch.
Settings worth checking after an update
Patch 1.0.11 added aim toggle, sprint toggle and hold-to-attack options. Patch 1.1.2 added reload rebinding. Check these settings when an older guide assumes you must hold a control.
Change one binding at a time and test a normal catch before a boss. If a key works in the menu but the expected action fails in-game, note the equipped item and action state as well as the key itself.
