Travel upgrade plan
Boat engine upgrade priority
Upgrade when sailing is the bottleneck—not because a faster engine looks like the next story key. This route protects required bait, boss bodies and combat spending before travel convenience.
Engine principles
What an engine does—and does not do
Travel is not progression
Keys let the crew drive, boss hand-ins open the next route and Radar markers identify it. More engine is useful only after those checks are complete.
Keep a story reserve
A required boss lure, dependable weapon or empty inventory slot can be more valuable than faster sailing at the moment the next quest starts.
Buy against repeated travel
An engine pays back when the current run repeatedly crosses open water. It does not improve aim, damage, catch pools or boss preparation.
Separate utility from 100%
The first improvement can help during the story; the best tier can wait for achievement cleanup if reaching it would drain the active route budget.
The current data verifies the two engine achievement milestones, not shop costs or speed figures. This guide therefore gives decision rules and explicitly sends live numbers back to the in-game vendor.
Five-step decision
Should you upgrade now?
Run this check in order whenever the engine vendor starts competing with the next weapon or lure.
- 01
Confirm the route is actually open
Collect the boat keys, complete the local boss hand-in and check the Radar marker. An engine cannot substitute for those progression requirements.
- 02
Reserve the next encounter budget
Protect enough coins and inventory space for the lure, weapon, food or carried body required by the next island objective.
- 03
Identify the real bottleneck
If combat or a missing quest item is stopping progress, solve that first. Consider the engine when repeated sailing—not the encounter itself—is consuming the run.
- 04
Buy a milestone deliberately
The first engine improvement and the best engine tier correspond to separate achievements. Decide whether the purchase is for travel now or completion cleanup later.
- 05
Recheck after each stage
Do not assume the next improvement has the same value or cost. Test the current boat and verify the live vendor before committing another stage of savings.
Stage purchase advice
Engine timing across five islands
Opening
Wait until the opening boss hand-in gives access to the boat route. Establish reliable damage before treating speed as the first purchase.
Any available dependable starter weapon. Finishing catches and surviving Spider Crab matter before luxury upgrades; the Pistol is listed for Forest Island.
Spending every coin on a rod while lacking damage.
Forest
Consider the first improvement only after Giant Piranha prep is funded and repeated travel has become the actual delay.
Balanced close/mid-range damage. Giant Piranha is easier when missed attacks can be punished quickly.
Carrying quest pickups in a full inventory.
Desert
Keep a cash buffer for the Desert lure and sustained-damage plan; an engine does not solve the Pufferfish or Blue Shark fight.
Reliable sustained damage. Pufferfish and Blue Shark reward uptime more than a single stylish shot.
Confusing the optional grill route with the story route.
Rocks
Protect the Professional Boss Lure and Tuna-to-Albatross chain before spending the route fund on travel comfort.
Accurate rifle or sniper setup. Albatross spends time at range and killscore challenges benefit from accuracy.
Selling the Tuna body for short-term cash.
Volcano
Finish the best-engine achievement after the late-game primary, food and whale-chain preparation are secure unless travel remains the bottleneck.
Fully upgraded primary plus food reserves. The whale chain is longer and punishes low ammunition or recovery.
Starting the trigger without room to preserve key bodies.

The route-safe answers
Known milestones stay explicit; unverified prices stay out of the page.
Do boat engine upgrades unlock new islands in How to Fish?
No. Island progression comes from local quests, required boss hand-ins, boat access and Radar markers. Engine improvements change travel convenience; they do not replace the story trigger.
What do boat engine upgrades cost?
This Patch 1.0.10 guide does not publish engine prices because the current reference dataset does not contain stable verified values. Check the live vendor before budgeting instead of relying on an invented number.
When should I buy the first engine upgrade?
After the boat route is open and the next required bait plus a dependable weapon are funded. Buy earlier only when repeated sailing is demonstrably slowing the route more than combat or quest preparation.
Which achievements are tied to boat engines?
Getting an upgrade is awarded for the first engine improvement. I am speed requires the best engine tier, so the two milestones can be planned at different points in a run.
