Catch planning

Bait, lures & quest triggers

Use regular lures to widen a repeatable catch pool, boss lures for named encounters and quest bait for story progression. The three jobs look similar in inventory but should not share one budget.

Beginner

The first purchased lure tier expands the Forest pool and adds two optional collection bosses.

Standard

The Desert tier supplies both Tourist trade candidates and the shark needed to unlock the grill.

Professional

This profitable Rocks tier funds late weapons, while its boss lure starts the Albatross chain.

Scientific

The final regular tier produces four-figure catches and one costly optional Collector encounter.

Coin values come from the Patch 1.0.10 reference dataset. Recheck the live shop after a balance patch before planning an exact no-waste run.

Stage purchase advice

When is the boss lure actually necessary?

Forest

Build income before optional bosses

The $3 Beginner Lure expands routine catches. Giant Piranha uses Leech Bait, so the $40 Beginner Boss Lure is a collection decision rather than that story trigger.

Desert

Separate grill and route objectives

The $15 Standard Lure supplies income and Tourist trade options. The $280 Standard Boss Lure catches Blue Shark for the grill; Carrot summons the story Pufferfish.

Rocks

Protect the Tuna budget

The $1,200 Professional Boss Lure catches Tuna. Keep the defeated body: it is the Albatross trigger and worth more to the route than a short-term sale.

Volcano

Finish story spending first

The $5,800 Scientific Boss Lure targets optional Goblin Shark. The final whale chain instead begins with the Scientist's requested-fish hand-in.

Story and secret encounters

All 8 quest baits & triggers

Full route context →
01Lighthouse

Hot Dog

A cheap starter bait that replaces the default crab pool with the two better-paying shell catches.

How to get it
Buy for $1 at the opening shop.
What it triggers
Rock Crab / Lobster
02Lighthouse

Empty Beer Can

The first story bait; do not discard it before summoning the boss.

How to get it
Give a Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper.
What it triggers
Spider Crab
03Forest Island

Leech Bait

A quest-only bait that converts the Forest scavenger hunt into the second story encounter.

How to get it
Trade all three Forest ground Leeches to the lady by the lake.
What it triggers
Giant Piranha
04Desert Island

Carrot

The Desert story bait; Needlefish and Seahorse are confirmed trade choices.

How to get it
Trade an eligible endangered creature to the Tourist.
What it triggers
Pufferfish
05Desert Island

Coconut

An expensive secret-catch bait used for the hidden special-creature entry.

How to get it
Buy for $350 on the Desert route.
What it triggers
Bing Bong
06Rocks Island

Defeated Tuna

A carried physical trigger rather than rod bait; place it on open ground when fully prepared.

How to get it
Kill Tuna caught with a Professional Boss Lure and preserve its body.
What it triggers
Albatross
07Volcano Island

Fish Bucket / Whale Bait

The first trigger in the two-stage final whale chain.

How to get it
Bring the Volcano Scientist five requested fish.
What it triggers
Bowhead Whale
08Volcano Island

Defeated Bowhead Whale

Carry the first whale into the final trigger; selling it breaks the intended ending route.

How to get it
Defeat Bowhead Whale and keep the body intact.
What it triggers
Mutated Bowhead Whale
Some “bait” is a body, not a shop item

Defeated Tuna and defeated Bowhead Whale must remain intact for the next encounter. Selling, cooking or abandoning them breaks that route attempt.

Need damage?

Pair the lure with a finish plan

Hooking a boss only starts the encounter. Compare the eight documented weapons before spending on a lure the current loadout cannot safely convert.
